Looking for a Mother’s Day card craft that kids will love helping to make? This fingerprint dandelion card is simple, sweet, and produces a card that mums will genuinely want to keep.
All you need is paint, paper/card, and a few minutes – and kids get to put their own personal stamp (literally) on something special.
How to Make this Mother’s Day Card
What You’ll Need
- White or light-coloured card or thick paper
- Washable paints in soft colours (pastels work beautifully)
- A black or grey marker or crayon
- A fine-tipped black pen or thin marker for writing
- Baby wipes or a damp cloth for in-between colours
Instructions
- Draw the dandelion stem and spokes
Using a black or grey marker, draw a long curved stem and then add thin lines radiating outward from the top – like the spokes of a wheel. This is the dandelion base that the fingerprints will sit on. Don’t worry about it being perfect; a hand-drawn look adds to the charm. - Add the fingerprint “seeds”
Dip a fingertip into one of the paint colours and press it gently at the end of each spoke. Kids can use one colour or mix it up with several – pastels like blue, lilac, yellow, and mint look lovely together. Let them press away! - Add a centre dot
Use a fingertip (or the end of a paintbrush) to press a slightly larger dot in the centre where all the spokes meet. - Write your message
Once the paint is dry, add a handwritten message on the left side of the card. Something like “I couldn’t wish for a better mum…” is simple and genuinely lovely. Let your child write it themselves if they’re able – even wonky handwriting makes it more special. - Let it dry
Leave the card to air dry fully before folding or gifting.

Tips for Parents:
- Nail the spokes first: Draw the dandelion outline before the paint comes out – it’s much easier to keep things tidy that way.
- Wipe between colours: A baby wipe between each colour keeps the shades from muddying together.
- Thick card holds up better: Standard printer paper can wrinkle under paint, so grab some card if you have it.
- Let it dry before writing: Wet paint and pen don’t mix – give it time to fully dry before adding the message.
- Keep it relaxed: Kids don’t need to follow the spokes exactly. A few fingerprints that go rogue just add character.
- Pop kids in play clothes or a craft apron before you start – paint has a way of going everywhere!
Give it a go and tag @mudmates in your masterpieces – we love seeing what you’ve been up to!
