LEGO Ice Rescue: Fun Science Activity for Kids

LEGO mini-figures frozen in an ice cube tray, ready for LEGO Ice Rescue: a Fun Science & Sensory Play for Kids

Looking for an activity that’s as entertaining as it is educational? Lego Ice Rescue is the perfect mix of sensory play, problem-solving, and just plain fun! Watch your little adventurers become frozen rescue heroes as they free Lego mini-figures from their icy prisons.

What You’ll Need

  • Lego mini-figures or small toys
  • Ice cube trays or small containers
  • Water
  • Optional: Food colouring or glitter
  • A freezer
  • Tools for excavation (e.g., plastic spoons, droppers, toy hammers, or salt)
  • Containers (to contain the mess and to distinguish the different experiments)
  • Safety gear (e.g. goggles to protect eyes from any flying ice)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Prisoners: Place a Lego mini-figure in each compartment of your ice cube tray or container. Add a few drops of food colouring or glitter to the water if you like.
  2. Freeze: Fill the tray with water, making sure the toys are fully submerged. Pop it into the freezer and wait until the cubes are completely frozen (this usually takes a few hours or overnight).
  3. Set the Scene: Remove the frozen Lego figures from the trays and place them into a shallow bowl, tray or containers. I recommend putting the ice cubes in separate containers. This way, your kids can conduct different experiments on them without mixing up the results.
  4. Rescue Time: Hand your kids the excavation tools and let the Lego Ice Rescue mission begin.

Here are some fun methods to try:

  1. Sprinkle some salt on the ice cube and watch it slowly melt. (Salt lowers the freezing point of water and accelerates melting).
  2. Use a dropper to drip room temperature water on the ice and observe the effect.
  3. Use warm water and drip it on the ice.
  4. Drip hot water on the ice (you may want to handle this step if your kids are young).
  5. Combine salt with water and drip the salty solution onto the ice.
  6. Place the ice cube outside in the sun and let natural heat do the work.
  7. Put the ice cube next to a heater for a quick melt.
  8. Use a toy hammer or wooden chopstick to chip away at the ice (protect eyes with a pair of safety or swim goggles).

Encourage your kids to try different techniques and talk about what works best. This activity is a fantastic way to introduce concepts like heat transfer and freezing points while having hands-on fun.

Why LEGO Ice Rescue is a Must-Try Activity

LEGO Ice Rescue isn’t just fun — it’s a great way for kids to explore science, problem-solving, and sensory play all in one activity. Whether they’re experimenting with different melting methods or practicing fine motor skills, this hands-on challenge keeps them engaged while learning through play.

So grab those LEGO figures, freeze them up, and let the icy adventures begin!
