2-Ingredient Taste-Safe Slime

Taste-safe slime being squeezed in a hand, made from just two ingredients.

If you’ve been put off making slime because of all the glue and borax involved, this one’s for you.

This taste-safe slime uses just two ingredients – psyllium husk and water. That’s it. No glue, no borax, no activators, no trip to a specialist shop. Just something you can grab at the supermarket and something that comes out of the tap.

It doesn’t stick to everything, it feels amazing to play with, and it’s completely safe if little ones put it in their mouths. (Honestly, it’s pretty therapeutic for adults too.)

What You’ll Need

  • 1 Tablespoon psyllium husk powder (find it in the health food aisle at the supermarket – Metamucil works too)
  • 1 cup water
  • A few drops of food colouring (optional, but makes it extra fun)
  • A microwave-safe bowl

How to Make Taste-Safe Slime

Step 1: Add 1 Tablespoon of psyllium husk and 1 cup of water to a microwave-safe bowl. Give it a quick stir.

Step 2: If you want coloured slime, add a few drops of food colouring now and stir through.

Step 3: Microwave for 4 minutes. Keep an eye on it – it will bubble up as it cooks.

Step 4: Leave it to cool completely before handing it over to little ones. It sets into a smooth, gel-like slime as it cools.

Why This Slime is Different

Most slime recipes use PVA glue and borax – or borax substitutes that still aren’t great for toddlers who explore with their mouths. This psyllium husk slime sidesteps all of that.

Psyllium husk is a natural plant-based fibre. It’s the main ingredient in products like Metamucil. When you heat it with water, it forms a gel – which is exactly what gives this slime its satisfying, stretchy texture.

Ideas for Play

  • Squish and stretch it on a tray or in a sensory bin
  • Press toy animals or dinosaurs into it for small world play
  • Make a few different colours and let kids mix them together
  • Use it in a mud kitchen alongside water and sand
  • Pop it in the bath for easy cleanup (it rinses away easily).

Because it’s taste-safe, this is ideal for toddlers and younger preschoolers who still put things in their mouths. Always supervise play, but you can relax knowing there’s nothing harmful in there.

Tips

  • The slime thickens as it cools – if it seems too runny straight out of the microwave, give it 20 minutes before adding more psyllium husk.
  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge and it’ll last a few days.
  • Make a few batches in different colours and let kids mix them – watching the colours combine is half the fun.
  • Food colouring can stain, so pop a craft apron on little ones and put down a tray or fitted tablecloth if you’re playing indoors.
  • Clean up is easy – warm water rinses it off hands and surfaces.

Our Craft Aprons are made for exactly this kind of play.

Pop one on before you get started and clothes stay clean underneath – no soaking, no scrubbing, just straight in the washing machine if needed.
