Homemade Puff Paint

Homemade Puff Paint Recipe

This homemade puff paint is a fantastic cheap, quick and easy activity using basic household ingredients that is sure to delight all kids! Master 5 and Miss 2 3/4 were fascinated with the ‘puffing’ process and outcome. A great activity for all budding artists!

What You Will Need:

  • 1 cup self raising flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water
  • Food colouring
  • A large mixing bowl
  • Several smaller bowls (one for each colour you choose)
  • Cardboard
  • Spoons/brushes/cotton buds for applying the puff paint

Instructions for making puff paint:

Mix the flour and salt together in a large bowl. Add the water and mix until smooth.

Separate the mixture into separate bowls (however many colours you are using). Add a few drops of food colouring to each bowl and mix well.

Then give your kids some cardboard and let their creativity shine! We used spoons, cotton buds and paint brushes to apply the puff paint mixture to the cardboard. For best results it needs to be applied thickly.

It’s best to slip on their Mud Mates NZ-made Craft Aprons or Coveralls first – these are perfect for messy artists (like my kids are!)

Once they’ve completed their masterpiece pop it in the microwave on high for 10 seconds. Take a peek to make sure it’s puffing up, then continue microwaving in 10 second bursts until it’s dry and puffy.
Ours took between 30 seconds and 1 minute depending on how much had been applied.

Take care when removing it from the microwave as it will be warm.

Miss 2 3/4 was rather chuffed with her creations!
