Matariki is the Māori New Year, celebrated with the rise of the Matariki star cluster (Pleiades). It marks a time of renewal and celebration in late June or early July, reflecting on the past and planning for the future. Traditionally, it includes remembering those who have passed, celebrating the present with feasts and gatherings, and looking forward to new beginnings. Matariki is a time for family, community, and connecting with the environment.

How to make Matariki Star Pattern Art

Colour a piece of cardboard using pastel crayons to create the background for your art. You could also experiment with paint, watercolors or even coloured pencils.

While the background dries (if you’ve used paint), draw a star on a piece of white card and decorate it using black pastel, crayons, or pens.
