7 Fun Outdoor Picnic Games for Kids

Kids playing frisbee golf - a fun outdoor picnic game

Whether you’re at the beach, the park or the zoo, the playing of picnic games is compulsory! With a little planning and preparation (or not!), there is plenty of fun to be had by all the family. Huge fans of spending time having fun outside, we’ve played many neat picnic games with our kids. We thought it was time to share some of our favourites with you.

7 of our Favourite Picnic Games for Kids

One of the best things about summer is being able to grab the family and head out for a picnic. Low cost and a way to exercise and tire the kids out (with any luck!), picnics rank highly on our list of fun summer activities. While we love to eat the picnic food we packed at the local picnic table (covered with our picnic table cover of course), there are plenty of games we love to play. Here are seven of our favourite picnic games:

  1. Blanket Volleyball – grab your picnic blanket, put a ball on top and each person holds a corner. The aim is to launch the ball between teams, scoring a point if the ball falls off your opponent’s side of the blanket.
  2. Races and relays – you can use your imagination for this! Race against each other, or relay in teams: running, hopping, wheelbarrow races, three legged race or sack races.

  3. Glass Half Full – there are two teams, each with a bucket full of water, an empty bucket, a plastic cup and a blindfold. The team members take turns being blindfolded and with the verbal help from their team, aim to move water from the full to the empty bucket. Distances between buckets can be increased depending on age of the team members.
  4. Frisbee Golf – spread empty buckets around your outdoor space. See how many throws of the frisbee are needed to get the frisbee into each bucket. Just like golf, the smaller the number, the winner!

  5. Scavenger Hunt – once you know where your picnic will be, create a list of things to find there. From statues to different shaped leaves, you can target your scavenger hunt list to suit the location and the age of your kids.
  6. Redlight Greenlight – like statues, one person is the police officer and says “greenlight.” Everyone else runs around until the police officer says “redlight” which is when everyone must stop. The last person to stop moving is out, and the game continues until there is only one person and the police officer left.
  7. Bubble Blowing – what kids don’t like bubbles? See how many bubbles they can pop with their fingers, knees, heads and even feet!
