Looking for a festive activity to keep the kids entertained this holiday season? Christmas chalk pastel art is a fun and creative way to celebrate. With just a few supplies, your children (and you!) can create colourful masterpieces featuring iconic Christmas symbols like trees and candy canes. Plus, these artworks aren’t just for display — you can turn them into handmade Christmas cards!

Chalk pastels are a fantastic medium for kids. They’re easy to use, vibrant, and forgiving for little hands still perfecting their fine motor skills.

What You’ll Need

  • Black card or thick paper
  • White card or sturdy paper for templates
  • Masking tape
  • Chalk pastels in your favourite colours
  • Paper towels

How to Create Magical Christmas Chalk Pastel Art with Your Kids

  1. Create your template by drawing your chosen design, like a Christmas tree or candy cane, onto white card. Cut it out to create a sturdy template. Place the template on a sheet of black card and secure it with small pieces of masking tape.
  2. Pick a few colours for your design. Use one colour at a time to draw thick lines around the edges of the template. Kids can layer the colours by drawing over them multiple times to make the lines bold and vibrant. Decide whether to create a pattern or mix colours randomly — either way, every design will be unique!
  3. Once the lines are thick enough, it’s time for the fun part: smudging! Use your fingertips to gently blend the chalk pastel outward from the edge of the template. Wipe fingers clean between colours using a paper towel to keep the colours bright and distinct.
  4. If you’d like to deepen the colours or make the smudging effect more dramatic, simply go back and add another layer of chalk pastel around the edges, then smudge again.
  5. Carefully take the paper outside and gently blow off any excess chalk dust. Once done, slowly remove the template to reveal the crisp outline of your design. If there’s pastel dust under the template, blow it off or use a cotton bud to clean the edges.
