We love messy play at the Mud Mates headquarters but sometimes it’s nice to have an activity with minimal prep and very little mess to clean up afterwards. This easy baby wipe tie dye art ticks those boxes!
Both children (Master 5 and Miss 2 1/2) enjoyed this activity. They were blown away with their creations – the look of surprise and delight on their faces when they first discovered the outcome was priceless.
What You Will Need to Create Baby Wipe Tie Dye Art:
- Baby wipes
- Rubber bands
- Washable markers
- Paper towels
Instructions:
Hold the centre of the baby wipe. Twist it up then wrap rubber bands around to divide the wrap into sections.

Have your child colour in each section between the rubber bands with the coloured markers. The trick for a more vibrant, colourful creation is to get as much marker on the wipe as possible. Help your child really get the colour into the folds of the wipe.

This is a great opportunity to help your little one with colour recognition and also teach them about patterning. Start with a simple pattern like pink, purple, pink purple and ask for their help in determining the next colour in the sequence. It’s also a great activity to work on their fine motor skills.
Once each section has been coloured in, help your child to carefully remove the rubber bands. Place the wipe on top of 2 paper towels and leave to dry. Once dry, carefully remove the rubber bands.

You could frame the finished artwork, use as wrapping paper for small gifts, add a pipe cleaner to make a flag or make some gorgeous tie dye bunting.
I’d love to know what you will do with your child’s creations…. please let me know in the comments below.

Why washable markers? What about water colors? Would fan folding produce stronger color than twisting? Just wondering….
Thanks for the ideas! If you experiment, please let us know how you get on!
Can’t wait to try this project. My grandkids are here so I’m thinking of all kinds of ideas to do with them. Two girls, 2 and 4, looks easy and not too messy.
Thanks Patti. I’m sure they’ll enjoy it!
Great idea using things we all have at home. I think they’d make a great card background to send to a grandparent, etc.
That’s a great idea Keryn, thanks for sharing!
What a great idea! I even have those things at home to give this a try too! Thanks heaps!
You’re welcome Jackie. Would love to know how you get on. I hope your kids enjoy the activity too!
